Referees pedalling for a good cause

29 Oct, 2009 08:03 AM
It was the sizzle of sausages and a bright and unusually warm Oberon morning that welcomed four committed Rugby League referees on bikes to the Oberon Industrial and Farming Store last Tuesday.

The four riders, NRL referees Ben Cummins, Bernard and Gerard Sutton and marketing liaison manager with Ruralco Rural Supplies and referee of the Toyota Cup Competition, Chris Sutton, dropped by the store on the second day of their seven-day 1000 kilometre ride from Girraween in Sydney to Coonabarabran in the Ride for Rural Kids to raise funds for Aussie Helpers Children’s Fund.

Ride for Rural Kids travelled through Windsor, Oberon, Bathurst, Blayney, Cowra Forbes, Parkes, Orange, Rylstone, Mudgee, Gulgong, Wellington, Dubbo, Dunedoo, Coolah and Binnaway before finishing up at Coonabarabran on Monday, October 26, welcomed by Aussie Helpers Children’s Fund founder Lee Kernaghan.

Oberon Industrial and Farming Supplies has thrown its support behind the bike riders by running a wood raffle in an effort to raise money. The wood raffle raised $108 and was won by Erna Crncec from Oberon.

All funds raised will go to Aussie Helpers Children’s Fund, which was established in 2009 to assist disadvantaged children in rural Australia. The fund is an extension of Aussie Helpers, a self-funded, volunteer organisation of which Lee is a patron.

The riders were blessed with sunny, warm weather during their week-long ride, but were welcomed to the Coonabarabran Races with a big fall of rain.

Despite the fact the races were eventually cancelled due to the rain, the crowds stayed on to enjoy entertainment by Lee Kernaghan and a charity auction of sporting memorabilia.

Money raised is yet to be finalised, however, it is expected to be more than $40,000.

The ride has received strong support from the NRL and from Toyota, Blackman Bicycles, Icons of Sport, The Land Newspaper, Macquarie Radio Network 2GB, Xavier Advertising, Ruralco, OSKA Professional and CRT.
