 Quick delivery for Bailey

Quick delivery for Bailey

02 Sep, 2010 11:03 AM
The staff at Oberon Hospital had a rare experience on Friday, August 20 with the birth of Bailey William Sewell.

The hospital staff barely had time to prepare for the birth after the hospital stopped delivering babies around five years ago, when Christy Sewell and husband Brad arrived on Friday evening well into labour, without enough time to reach Bathurst Hospital.

Christy said that there was no warning signs before her water broke at around 5:30pm on Friday, and that ten minutes later contractions began only three minutes apart.

By the time the car was packed and Christy's mother had arrived to take care of their two year old son Riley, the contractions were only one minute apart, so they decided to go to Oberon Hospital to get checked.

This was a lucky decision, as once they arrived, and before Christy could even receive any pain relief, Bailey was on his way, and was born at 6:37pm, weighing 7lb 9oz and measuring 52cm long. Bailey was delivered by a midwife, a doctor and Oberon hospital staff who had experience in maternity.

Christy said the short labour sure beat the 16 hour long labour she endured with her first son.

"I wouldn't wish it on anyone as it was so scary and intense," she said.

Christy and baby Bailey were then transferred to Bathurst Hospital by ambulance.

Health Service Manager of Oberon Hospital Eric Ford said that Bailey was one of only a couple of babies to be born at Oberon in the last five years, and that the birth went very smoothly.

Christy and Brad would like to say a big thanks to the staff at the Oberon Hospital for delivering their little boy safely into the world under such stressful circumstances.
