FRIENDS of the Oberon Library (FOOLS) held a mini-Olympics, with teams competing in events including javelin throwing (straws), discus (paper plates) and a marathon run (around the library fence). The afternoon ended with Chinese whispers (and some creative invention) and a hearty tea of performance-enhancing pumpkin scones and thousand year old eggs (well, two weeks old at least, preserved by Lyndle Hawkes). Gold medals were eaten all round.
The FOOLS next meeting will celebrate the Year of the Potato. A video from ABC’s Landline explaining why the potato is the best vegetable to grow, and some historic recollections of potato growing in Oberon will feature, and a Scottish potato tea courtesy of Mary Miller will be held. Join us in the warm and friendly atmosphere of Oberon Library on the first Tuesday of the month, September 2, at 3pm, following Talking About Books at 1pm.
On Saturday, September 27 between 10am and 2pm, before the Relay for Life, the FOOLS will run a bargain book sale at the library, with plenty of hot potatoes to eat. Potato sack races for the energetic may be on the program.
A reminder that the Readao will be held on Monday, September 1. Volunteers are asked to read to small groups of school children in locations around town; and there will be a sausage sizzle. The Readao was a huge success last year – let Jenny Hansen know if you want to be in it.
FOOLS outings are planned for the warmer weather. There is no joining charge. Contact Jenny Hansen at the Library 6336-0012 for full details.
