WHEN Oberon residents go to the polls on August 21 with the rest of the country to vote for a new federal parliament, they will be voting in a new electorate.
After spending three years in the electorate of Macquarie, Oberon will return to the Calare electorate in election 2010.
Calare is currently held by The Nationals’ John Cobb, but his position is being challenged by four candidates, Labor’s Kevin Duffy, The Greens’ Jeremy Buckingham, and Independents Paul Blanch and Karen Romano.
John Cobb is already on the election trail, visiting Oberon this week to meet with council and to introduce himself to business owners and residents.
Mr Cobb said he was getting in touch with the area, and was already very well informed of Oberon's water situation. He has viewed the dam at its current low level.
“I can't believe there is 10 per cent in there,” he said.
He said he understands how frightening it is for the local people to see the dam dropping, even though Oberon is the smallest user of the dam and the dam is the town’s sole source of water.
Mr Cobb said he was also very supportive of Oberon's bid to build an aged care facility.
Mr Cobb said not only is the aged care facility good for businesses, but also it means Oberon will need more health professionals.
“It is more reason to have doctors here,” he said.
Mr Cobb said he feels it is the Federal Government’s job to help get an aged care facility for Oberon.
“I'm a big supporter,” he said.
“I can't think of anything better for the town to have,” he said.
