Oberon Public gets a $2m boost

18 Jun, 2009 08:45 AM
OBERON Public School has received $2 million in funding through the second round of the Rudd Government’s Primary Schools in the 21st Century Program.

The two original buildings of the Oberon Public School, dating back to 1872, will have their interiors completely transformed to include a new administration area, new offices, new staff facilities, new sickbay and bathroom facilities for the sickbay, and a new clerical work room.

The canteen area will be completely rebuilt with a new covered outdoor learning and eating area.

The entrance to the school will also be revamped, and a new bus shelter will also be built.

Principal of Oberon Public School, Stan Kowalski, said that the infants block will also receive new roofing, and internal and external painting will be carried out on all classrooms.

“It is an exciting time for the school,” said Mr Kowalski.

Mr Kowalski said that the extra funding will mean that the original 1872 buildings will be restored in their original style, and any sections that were added at a later date will be removed or returned to the 19th century style.

He said that local contractors should be reminded to register with construction firm Laing O'Rourke, who will be in charge of construction but will sub-contract out smaller contractors to carry out some of the work.

“Part of the process is that it is opened up to local businesses to participate instead of going to contractors from other areas,” he said.
