Oberon gets behind Can Assist

29 Oct, 2009 09:00 AM
The Oberon branch of Can Assist was only formed in January this year but with the help of the community and businesses it is already making good progress financially.

Special thanks go to the Edith community, who has transferred over $14,000 into the Can Assist account.

The community had held this money in trust and decided Can Assist could use it to benefit the community. Can Assist will ensure that this money does exactly that.

The following people and businesses are recognised for their support for Oberon Can Assist: Committee of the Cinderella Ball, Oberon Masonic Lodge, Mawhoods IGA Treasure Chest, Oberon Campdraft Committee, Oberon RSL Club, Oberon Council Youth Group, Oberon Motors, Inner Wheel, Oberon Darts Club, Rosedale Gifts, and EDAP Western Group.

All of these people have been most generous with their support. Without them Can Assist would not be in the positive financial position it is in today.

Can Assist Oberon is about to embark on the last of their fundraising for this year.

Treasurer Max Sward has donated a yearling steer which will be slaughtered in December, divided into four to be raffled over the next few weeks. A quarter of a beast to four lucky winners just in time for Christmas.

Tickets will be available from Rosedale Gifts or from Can Assist volunteers in the street.

“As treasurer, I love getting money given to me so we can help whoever we can in the Oberon Local Government Area who are affected by cancer and could do with a helping hand,” said Max Sward.

The raffle will be drawn at the Can Assist meeting at the RSL on December 9 at 7pm.

Locals are urged to come to the meeting, become a member and enjoy helping those in need.

“As our name suggests we can only assist with expenses, we cannot pay all bills. We help with any requests for assistance associated with cancer treatment,” said Mr Sward.

“I must also stress that we give assistance with payment of accounts, but we do not give out cash. However, before we can help, we must be contacted,” he said.

If you, or you family, needs help dealing with cancer, please contact Debbie Young on 0412 696 292 or Kevin Campbell on 6336 1313.
