Local artist Michelle Frances Collocott has further captured the essence of Oberon in her most recent works to be displayed in Newtown in July.
Michelle has had an extremely successful career, having obtained her Diploma in Design and Craft from the National Art School, Sydney in 1965. In addition to many other professional gallery exhibitions, Michelle was selected in 1973 to show in New York in the International Telephone and Telegraph Acquisitive Award, an exhibition which toured through the United States of America.
Michelle established a studio at Gingkin near Oberon and worked from there in the 1970’s and 1980’s, having a range of solo and group showings in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, as well as London. In 1976, her work was included in the BHP Selection Exhibition of Contemporary Australian Art in Melbourne, and in 1980 she was one of the ‘Australian Artists of Fame and Promise’.
Among a plethora of amazing achievements and exhibitions, in both Australia and overseas, in 1995 Michelle participated in redesign and making of Australia’s new National Flag.
In 1998 Michelle’s interest in exploring landscape led her to obtain six acres on the Abercrombie Road near Oberon, which inspired her 3 Ponds Series, which was primarily focused on sky, earth and water. Series A and B were exhibited at the Bryan Hooper Gallery in Sydney in 2003.
Michelle’s work is represented in corporate fine art collections, such as those of IT and T in New York, BHP, Westpac, Commonwealth Bank, Rainier National Bank in Seattle, the permanent collections of the Australian National Gallery, the Art Gallery of South Australia, and the collections at the University of Sydney, University of Technology, Mitchell CAE, Conservatorium of Music, and North Sydney and Ku-Ring-Gai Councils.
Michelle’s latest series, 3 Ponds Series C is complete and will be exhibited at the Wilson Street Gallery in Newtown, opening on Saturday the 19th of July 2008 from 4pm until 6pm. The exhibition will be showing from Saturday the 19th of July until Sunday the 10th of August 2008.
Michelle encourages members of the Oberon community who will be in Sydney during this time to view the exhibition, and see our beautiful local landscape captured in art.
