Oberon Can Assist one year on

27 Aug, 2009 10:40 AM
Can Assist had a rocky start in Oberon in January 2009, but now is running smoothly and has had a lot of community support and interest, and 56 financial members.

Can Assist now has a segment on Prime news, and has featured in articles in the Oberon Review.

The Oberon Branch of Can Assist is also associating with other branches, sharing information and experiences.

There is a state wide Can Assist meeting in Orange in October.

Can Assist had a very successful stall at the Oberon Show, which generated a lot of interest and received donations from many organisations.

Special thanks must go to the Edith Hall trustees who gave Oberon Can Assist the proceeds when the trust was wound up, and also to the fundraising committee for holding a ball to raise funds for Can Assist.

The Federal Government gave Oberon Can Assist a one off donation and this supplied the branch with a new laptop and printer, which have been put to good use.

Can Assist Oberon have had only one request for help at this stage, but recently have had three more referrals.

It is important for the community to remember that all matters and referrals are treated with the utmost respect and confidentiality and that people requesting assistance can be assured that only the executive committee will know who these people are, as they are only referred to as a number at meetings.

The Oberon Branch Can Assist had, at the time of their Annual meeting, in excess of $24,000 thanks to the generosity of local groups and organisations.

At the meeting, Kevin Campbell was also voted in as the new president, Debbie Young will continue on as secretary, as will Max Sward as treasurer.

It was also decided at the meeting that membership be raised to $5 per person annually, and that membership renewals will be sent out in the coming weeks.

New members are encouraged to join this worthwhile cause, which provides support for local people suffering the effects of cancer, with all funds staying in the community.

Can Assist is also looking for volunteers to man a barbecue at Brewongle on the 31st of October. Anyone who can help please contact Kevin on 63361313 or Debbie Young on 0412 696292.
