New life for an old bridge

02 Jul, 2009 11:10 AM
THE historic Burrough's Crossing Bridge will receive a facelift thanks to an $80,000 allocation for repairs to the bridge in the 2009/2010 Oberon Council budget.

The wooden girders, which were transported for the bridge from the Blue Talisman Mine at Duckmaloi about 70 years ago, were tested more than 12 months ago for load carrying capacity. As a result a five-tonne weight limit was applied to the bridge, meaning trucks were forced to take an alternate route through McKeon's Road. The concrete piers of the bridge were also tested and found to be in good condition.

The $80,000 will be put towards funding concrete members for the girders and the deck of the bridge.

The concrete members used for the bridge are expected to have a 100-year life span.

The council is waiting on the company who is supplying the concrete before it can commence work.
