New laws set to target intoxication at hot spots

05 Dec, 2008 07:38 AM
NEW laws will restrict the sales of alcohol at hot spot late night venues.

The measures that Gaming and Racing Minister Kevin Greene will introduce have been aimed at reducing intoxication, increasing safety of patrons and preventing alcohol-related anti-social behaviour and violence.

Mr Green said patrons and staff at 48 targeted licensed venues, including Bathurst, where alcohol is served late into the night should be aware of the new restrictions on trading hours and services.

Lockouts will be in force from 2am to 5am, where patrons will not be allowed to enter during that time.

Other measures that will apply include the closure of bars for service of alcohol 30 minutes before closing time.

A range of measures will be implemented, including bans on serving alcoholic drinks in glass or breakable plastic containers and the selling of shots of alcoholic drinks.

No drinks containing more than 50 per cent spirits or liqueur can be sold, with a ban on ready-to-drink beverages over five percent alcohol or mixed drinks with more than one nip.

There will also be a limit of four placed on the number of drinks any person can buy at one time. There would also be 10 minute time outs every hour where no alcohol would be sold.

Mr Greene said frontline staff have been working to ensure each of the 48 target venues have arrangements in place.

Fines will apply to patrons and licensees caught breaching the new laws, Mr Green said.

Licensees face a maximum penalty of 12 months gaol and a $11,000 fine.

Troublesome patrons who refuse to leave premises or attempt to re-enter or remain in the vicinity once ejected face on-the-spot fines of $550 for each offence.
