Community members are encouraged to attend a meeting to form a branch of Can Assist in Oberon.
For more than 50 years Can Assist has provided direct financial assistance, accommodation and support services for more than 2000 people affected by cancer each year in rural and regional NSW.
The meeting, which is being co-ordinated by local man Kevin Campbell, will be held on December 14 at Oberon RSL from 2pm.
“This will be great for the people of Oberon and surrounding areas, especially those who are struggling to make ends meet because of their cancer,” Mr Campbell said.
“A new branch would work in the local community to help people who have cancer and their carers in many ways.”
Mr Campbell said the branch would aim to raise funds through a range of fundraising activities.
Funds would be used to support people affected by cancer who are having difficulty with the expenses that come with serious illness, such as medication, wigs, accommodation, transport and other bills.
Through the network of branches and volunteers, Can Assist provides more than $1.85 million per annum in direct support to cancer patients from country NSW.
The majority of financial assistance is distributed through the network of 41 branches.
Can Assist also operates the Jean Colvin Hospital in Sydney where rural cancer patients can stay during their six weeks of cancer treatment, Ecclesbourne (Sydney) and Lilier Lodge (Wagga Wagga) for people undergoing treatment as well as carers.
CEO of Can Assist, Robyn Cahoun said when locals know donations to Can Assist will directly help people in their own community they are very generous.
“We would be thrilled if a branch could commence in Oberon,” she said.
Ms Cahoun will be in attendance at the Oberon meeting to discuss activities and the important role a local branch plays in supporting people affected by cancer.
