Mark our big rally day on your calendar

Mark Saturday, February 20 next year on your calendar -that is the day when Oberon village will come alive with the Highlands Steam and Vintage Fair’s Grand Rally.

It will be a rallying call to all enthusiasts everywhere, of all types of machinery that they are participating in NSW premier heritage event.

As a spectator, be enthralled by the sights, the noise and colour of 150 vintage and veteran vehicles travelling in convoy through Oberon’s retail district with Highlands Pipe bands.

See the lumbering giants of farming history spewing smoke and flames and catch a glimpse of rare and interesting vehicles from Australia’s past once more plying the roads as they did last century.

The rally is just one part of the Oberon and Villages Summer Festival, as many other attractions will be happening on that day.

The Rotary Club of Oberon will be the purveyor of an “all day” breakfast from the rally grounds in Lowes Mount Road, Oberon and Oberon Rugby, Sports and Recreation Club will be supplying your favourite beverage during the Fair.

Another group presenting displays all weekend is the Oberon RSL Sub Branch. The Sub Branch built and manages the museum located on the corner of Ross and Oberon streets.

“The museum is operated as part of the welfare work we provide to the local returned and ex-servicemen and their families in Oberon,” sub-branch secretary Neville Stapleton said.

“We are also proud of the fact that we built the RSL Retirement Village located immediately behind the museum to house local Ex Servicemen and their widows.” The museum has been opened for just 12 months and its exhibits centre on the service of local men and women in all the great wars and fields of combat.

“Most of our displays have been donated by local individuals and families for which we are most grateful,” Mr Stapleton said.

There is also an exhibit relating to the town of Eceabat in Turkey, the nearest town to Gallipoli and the battles our local servicemen participated in during the First World War.

Oberon maintains an ongoing association with that town.

“As part of its association with the fair and as a stakeholder in the Oberon and Villages Summer Festival, the committee of the museum will hold a special exhibit and display during the three days commencing, February 19 next year..

Entry to the museum is free and it is open throughout the year.
