Life membership for RSL chief

30 Jul, 2010 08:40 AM
BILL Wilcox has again been recognised for his dedication and service to the Oberon community by being granted life membership of the Returned and Services League of Australia.

Bill has been a member of the Oberon RSL Sub-Branch since 1970. He first held office as vice-president in 1997. From 1998 to completion in 2000, he was a key member of the negotiation team for the sale of Sub-Branch property to the Oberon RSL Club Ltd. In 2001 he was instrumental in the building of the first free-standing war memorial in Oberon.

He took over the position of president in 2003 and supervised the building of four retirement units to create the Oberon RSL Village between 2004 and 2006.

In 2008 Bill led a small group of volunteers that built the current RSL Sub-Branch office and museum, and since it was completed he has been the head curator of the Oberon RSL Museum.

In 2005 Bill took the idea of forming a sister city relationship with the town of Eceabat, Gallipoli, to the Oberon Council. The council, along with the Oberon RSL Sub-Branch under Bill’s guidance, were successful in forming this relationship.

In 2008 BilI represented the Sub-Branch at the Anzac Day services in Gallipoli, at the invitation of the mayor of Eceabat and had the honour of laying a wreath at the dawn service. Bill has been a delegate to the Blue Mountains District Council (BMDC) since 2003 and took on the roll of president of BMDC in 2007.

Since the introduction of the new governance and the expanding rolls of district council presidents, he has been involved in many Sub-Branch visits and mediated in disputes between sub-branches of the BMDC and State branch.

Bill has represented Oberon Sub-Branch at NSW State Congress every year since 2004, fostering new relationships with other sub-branches, while promoting Oberon, and supporting motions of other sub-branches from the BMDC.

Bill has represented the sub-branch at all three local schools, from presentation nights to Anzac services. He has attended and preformed funeral tributes for ex-servicemen and women in the local area since 2003.

Since 2000 Bill, along with a small group of volunteers, has maintained the lawns and gardens in and around the retirement units, memorial and Sub-Branch properties.

This year hi tireless devotion to the Oberon Sub-Branch, exservicemen and women and war widows was recognised by the Oberon community, when he was named Oberon’s Citizen of the Year.
