Ideal opportunity for companionship

16 Oct, 2008 10:40 AM
THE Robey Independent Living Centre is just over one year old, and is just as popular as it was at its birth.

The Robey Centre is a place for elderly and disabled members of the Oberon community and inpatients in the Oberon Hospital to come and socialise and enjoy a friendly atmosphere on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday, from 10am until around 2pm.

There is a range of activities for people to enjoy while at the Robey Centre, such as craft, games such as Board Bingo, exercises, music, and even outings, such as picnics at the Common, the Oberon Dam and short drives on the bus owned by the Robey Centre.

Janice Musgrove, diversional therapist at the Robey Centre, said the real benefit of the Robey Centre was that it supplies an opportunity for socialising and companionship for those who may be isolated or unable to get out a great deal.

“I find the bus trips to be particularly social. We play music and sing,” she said.

“I always say to them 'You can come and if you don't like it, we'll take you home'. There is no obligation.”

Janice said many people have said they would have come earlier if they had known how good it was at the Robey Centre. She would like to encourage anyone who is elderly or has a disability who wishes to be involved to make contact. Those who wish to be involved can be picked up for activities, and will also be given a hot lunch each day.

“We definitely have room for more on Wednesdays and Thursdays,” she said.

Janice said she was also constantly looking for volunteers to help in the Robey Centre, as it is nearly completely run by volunteers.

“It is very satisfying. I always think it is good for your soul to do something for someone else,' she said.

“You are giving back to the community.”

Janice said the Robey Centre was flourishing and she hoped more participants and volunteers would become involved.

“We're here, we're doing well, and it is a great service we provide,” she said.
