Hundreds attend Anzac Day services in Oberon

30 Apr, 2009 12:47 PM
One hundred and seventy people gathered in the cold dawn for the start of Oberon’s Anzac Day services.

The dawn service was conducted by RSL sub-branch president Bill Wilcox, with Fr Adrian saying prayers.

Afterwards everyone returned to the RSL Cub for a warming breakfast of bacon, eggs and sausages.

The annual Anzac Day march got underway at 10.30am from the council chambers, moving down the street to the memorial to the sound of the pipes and drums from Bathurst.

Mr Wilcox said this year three school students, Ryan McDermott, Luke Foley and Drew Elliott, carried the Army, Navy and Air Force flags in the parade.

Thirty ex-servicemen and women marched, along with representatives of the SES and Rural Fire Service.

Wreaths were laid at the memorial before everyone adjourned to the RSL Club for the main service.

Around 140 people attended this service where Mr Wilcox spoke about his visit to Gallipoli for Anzac Day last year.

From April 24 the Turkish flag flew in honour of Oberon's sister city, Eceabat, in Turkey.

At the service new Anglican minister Reverend Tony Card said prayers. Readings were given by the captains of Oberon's two high schools.

When the service was finished everyone joined in an old-fashioned singalong of old war-time songs led by Ian Gordon and Trish Harvey.

A luncheon for ex-servicemen and women and their families followed.

The diggers then settled in for a beer, then held their own short sunset service.
