Oberon’s Citizen of the Year Barry Webb will be honoured today at Oberon’s Australia Day 2012 celebrations.
Barry, a quiet achiever, will be recognised for his outstanding service to the local community in volunteering many hours to the maintenance of the Oberon Showground and the Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway facility.
Barry has also maintained the grounds at the Old Methodist Cemetery on the Duckmaloi Road since 1994.
Locals know Barry as the local radio, television and antenna repairer and installer before his retirement five years ago.
Barry said he probably retired at the right time.
“In those days you could buy parts for radio and television repairs.
“These days you just buy a new television. Parts are not accessible from overseas,” he said.
Today’s official Australia Day ceremony will begin at 10.15am at the Oberon RSL Club and will be opened by emcee Mayor Don Fitzpatrick.
The ceremony will include unfurling of the Australian flag and the Australian National anthem sung by 2010 Citizen of the Year, Nancy Dennis.
An Australia Day address will be given by Member for Bathurst Paul Toole.
