Funds drying up as council offers help

19 Feb, 2009 09:00 AM
OBERON Council came close to exhausting its donations budget at Tuesday night's council meeting, by deciding to support several worthy causes.

Following the tragic Victorian bushfires the council made a unanimous decision to donate $1000 to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.

Councillors also showed support for the Industry Links Program. This program offers Oberon Year 10 and 11 students the opportunity to engage in the industry of their choice while still completing their school curriculum.

This program allows students to learn about different trades as they gain experience with local businesses. The program may also help to remedy the critical shortage of skilled workers in the area. Local engineering and trade industries from throughout the district have embraced the program with enthusiasm.

To date six local engineering companies and major stakeholders, such as Carter Holt Harvey (Structaflor), JELD-WEN, Moorehead Engineering, Oberon Engineering, Still Engineering and Carter Holt Harvey (MDF) have showed support for the program.

The program is also planned to include both metal trades and hospitality in 2009-2010.

The council showed dedication to continuing to support the program decided unanimously to donate $500 to it. “The more we can do to expand it, the better,” said Councillor Bob Hooper.

Council's final donation at the meeting was to assist the newly formed Burraga School P and C.

Following the opening of the school this year, the P and C was reinstated and Principal Jamie Medbury has outlined plans for the school to become involved in a program for integrating the Burraga pupils with students from other schools to broaden their exposure to their peers.

Council were instrumental in the reopening of the school, but some councillors showed concern that their continuing support of the school is setting a precedent, and the same may be expected by other schools, which may not always be possible.

Mayor Keith Sullivan announced that the Burraga P and C have already raised $1100. Council resolved to donate $200 to the Burraga School P and C.
