Festival celebrates colour and diversity

11 Feb, 2010 08:13 AM
The Oberon and Villages Summer Festival begins this weekend, celebrating the abundance and diversity of Oberon during our warm luscious summer months.

The festival begins with the greatly anticipated Zone Finals of the Miss Showgirl competition, where 23 girls from across out Zone, including last year's Oberon Showgirl Ashleigh Gilmore, will compete to go through to Sydney Royal Show.

Judging will occur on the morning of the 13th of February, with a Presentation Dinner at the RSL that night, beginning at 7pm. For more information, contact Karen Bailey on 6335 6262.

This weekend will also be an unmissable event at Jenolan Caves on Valentines Day. Bring folding chairs, wine and nibbles for two to the spectacular Grand Arch, Australia’s biggest open cave, for an extravagant, romantic and unique experience. The Underground Opera Company will present the world’s most stirring operatic works, in Opera in the Caves.

Not an opera buff? You will recognise musical greats from Carmen, Madame Butterfly, the Barber of Seville, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera and the immortal Nessun Dorma from Turandot.

Eyes will sparkle! Hearts will melt! Wear something warm and cuddly, and bring a blanket for two.

Fantastic indulgent and romantic weekend packages are still available. They include heart-melting opera, glorious caves, lavish dinners and fine wines. Jenolan’s first cave wine cellar will launch on Valentines Day. Stay in atmospheric Caves House, and enjoy champagne, chocolate, rose petals, candles and dessert served in your bedroom! Bookings can be made by calling 1300 76 33 11.

The weekend of the 19th to 21st of February is a huge event in the festival calender, with numerous events happening in the town, including the 110th Oberon Agricultural Show and the Highlands Steam and Vintage Fair.

On the same weekend, the Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway, Oberon Museum and Oberon RSL Sub Branch will be open with great displays and historical memorabilia.

The Festival is dotted with a number of underground concerts at Jenolan Caves to enjoy, and the Bands in the Common on the weekend of 5th to 7th of March. This weekend is another great opportunity to sample Oberon's bounty at The Tablelands Way Farmers Markets.

From the 13th to the 28th of March, visit spectacular Tarana for the Kowmung Playing for Humanity, cheer on some determined runners at the Historic Six Foot Marathon or grab a bargain and meet some colourful locals at the Oberon Swap Meet.

The Festival concludes on the Easter Weekend with the autumn Farmers Markets, and a fabulous Bikes Between the Boards weekend, with great music and entertainment.

Come and become immersed in Oberon and its circle of villages' history, bounty and character at this year's Summer Festival.
