THEY'VE only been in Oberon for two weeks, but already members of the Kalkat family are feeling like they are part of the community.
The family - Inderpal, his wife Sukhwinder, their 15-month-old son Keerat and Inderpal’s father Jasbir - has recently purchased Foodworks in Oberon, taking over the store on Monday.
The couple made the move to Oberon having spent the last 13 years working in Griffith on an orange and grape farm.
While it may seem like an unusual transition, being a small business owner is something Inderpal has dreamt about doing for some time.
"When I was younger and my family lived in New Zealand we owned a similar business, and its something I always wanted to get back into.
"It stayed in the back of my mind, and retail seemed the obvious option given our history," he said.
Before making the decision to buy Oberon Foodworks, Inderpal said he and Sukhwinder looked at a number of alternatives. "We looked at other IGA and Foodwork stores, but we liked Oberon. "It's close to Sydney and we have a lot of friends there, so it looked like a great opportunity," he said.
Since taking over the business Inderpal said he had been overwhelmed by the support shown by the community.
