Evans first to put her hand up for vacancy on Oberon Council

02 Sep, 2010 10:56 AM
The announcement of an elections to fill a single spot on Oberon Council has already brought prospective councillors out of the woodwork, with local Jill Evans being the first to publicly put her hand up for the job.

Jill said it was a great opportunity. She sees being elected for a two-year period instead of the regular four as an ideal time frame for a learning experience.

"It is a wonderful opportunity to not only learn at council, but also to work with eight other people," she said.

Far from being intimidated about being the only "new kid on the block" if elected, Jill immediately decided to run for council as soon as the election was called.

"My enthusiasm was rekindled," she said.

"I feel the two years is an opportune period of time to learn from the rest of council."

Jill ran unsuccessfully for council in 2008 but, far from letting this discourage her, she says she has learned a lot since then.

Jill said she used to think "I can do this and that", but she has learned it is a team effort.

"Lesson number one - there are nine of you on council," she said.

Jill said she has realised no one councillor can do things alone, but she is dedicated to being a councillor who can at least bring the community’s issues to the council.

Jill said she has not missed a council meeting for the last three years, and that it has been a real eye-opener.

"It is far more involved than anyone realises," she said.

Jill said she used to be "on her high horse" about things, but now knows how things work, and that many projects for Oberon take money, and time and work.

"Council is just like a business, and you have to be able to work alongside staff and other councillors," she said.

Jill said she wants to offer a fresh approach and an open mind, as well as common sense, a female perspective and transparency as a councillor. She wants to work for families, the aged and businesses in Oberon.

As a retired businesswoman, Jill said she has dealt with many people, and still does in her role working with many volunteer groups in the town.

"I can work with anybody," she said.

Jill said she is offering total commitme

nt to a role of councillor.

Candidates can nominate from September 13-22.

Nomination forms can be obtained at Oberon Council from September 7.
