Crumbling main street pavers to be replaced

19 Aug, 2010 11:33 AM
Locals won't have to watch their step as carefully in the main street of town once the embattled paving on the northern side of the street is replaced.

The gradually crumbling pavers, particularly from the Royal Hotel heading east, have been a cause of concern for locals and councillors, with the risk of people slipping not only on the pieces of pavement, but also on the ice and frost that is believed to have caused the damage in the first place.

Councillors voted at Tuesday night's meeting to replace the pavers from the Royal Hotel to just before the Oberon Review office, a distance of about 75 metres.

The pavers will be replaced with a layer of asphalt, and then a surface coating will be applied to imitate brick paving.

The total cost of this treatment will be $42,000.

Councillors also discussed the issue of ice on the street. Councillor Ian Doney suggested council could look at having heritage-style awnings placed on shopfronts along the main street to avoid the ice and frost on the pavement.

Councillors voted that council staff investigate opportunities for development of heritage-style awnings in the Oberon Street streetscape, and that main street shop owners be engaged in the process.
