Councillors have expressed their unhappiness with fuel prices in Oberon, and have agreed to approach fuel suppliers about the high costs of fuel in the town.
The decision arose after Councillor John McMahon queried at council’s last meeting why it was that Oberon appeared to have high fuel prices, compared to nearby locations.
Cr McMahon said he has found, after observing fuel prices in other cities and towns, that people purchasing fuel in Oberon can pay up to 15 cents a litre more than in other places.
“I cannot for the life of me see why we pay so much,” he said.
“Why is Oberon fuel nine to 11 cents dearer than Bathurst?”
Cr McMahon also questioned how Oberon fuel could be the most expensive, as Oberon could be regarded as one of the biggest consumers of diesel in the Tablelands due to its industries.
Cr McMahon’s concerns were shared by many councillors, and the decision was made to gather a list of costs of fuel from Bathurst, Orange and Oberon and that letters be written to Oberon fuel suppliers requesting an explanation for the excessive cost of fuel in the town.
