Council have decided to make an application to the NSW Department of Lands to be formally appointed as trust manager of the Flat Rock Reserve following ongoing controversy surrounding the popular camping spot, and also to develop a more concrete policy on the rules of primitive camping in our area.
Council have recently received a number of complaints regarding prolonged use by a number of campers who have set up extensive tents at the Flat Rock reserve.
Some of the complainants have stated that some of the campers have been at the camping ground for a number of months, and have set up washing lines, bush toilets, taken over picnic tables and have washed nappies and clothing in the river.
The complainants have said that they accept that the reserve is used for campers, but that the constant use of a fragile and beautiful area for long periods of time and for the above stated activities raises environmental issues. Council spoke with the two separate camps in question and have stated in their report on the issue that they do not feel that the campers were being inappropriate, were always courteous and moved on when they said they would.
The report that was presented to Council about the incidents at Flat Rock was slammed by a neighbour of the reserve, who complained during question time at the Council meeting on Tuesday night that her concerns had been misrepresented in the report and that she had been publicly named in the report to Council. Council apologised several times for the mistake.
Council also resolved at the meeting to investigate the possibility of managing the area at Burraga Dam, and also to identify other potential areas in Oberon's Local Government Area and develop a policy in relation to primitive camping grounds.
