The Oberon Show bullride, a traditional highlight of the Saturday night entertainment, is to be boosted to become a showpiece of the 2010 Show next February.
The event, to be billed as the Bullride Spectacular, will be expanded to include at least five classes, especially tailored to attract competitors of all ages.
Organiser Lance Bonham said the classes so far would comprise wild steer tagging, for teams of three; a junior steer ride for competitors aged 8 to 15; a juvenile steer ride for competitors aged16 and over; a novice bull ride; and a wild pig race for two-person teams.
There will also be display of horsemanship skills by Quinton Stapleton, to demonstrate the skills of breaking-in and training horses.
"The idea is to increase the events to attract a wider response, to make it all more entertaining and bring in people over a broad range of ages, from a wide region," Lance said.
"This can be both sport and fun, and the event, along with the fireworks, should be a spectacular way to close the first day of the show."
Lance said he had already attracted more than a dozen sponsors, and as a result there would be more attractive prize money for the evening.
Details had still to be finalised, depending on the final number of sponsors, but the prizes would be "more than in previous years."
Oberon Show Society president Bewryl Gibbons said the Bullride Spectacular was one of several expanded or additional events planned for next year's show to be held on February 20-21. "This will be the 110th Oberon Show, which makes it very special," she said. "As a result, we want to make it a show that people will remember."
