OBERON Council has decided to press on with getting biddy bush declared as a noxious weed in the Oberon area, despite claims that the Upper Macquarie County Council (UMCC) does not have the funding to control the weed if it is declared noxious.
Councillor John McMahon reported to the most recent ordinary council meeting that the UMCC does not have sufficient funds to dedicate to controlling biddy bush as well as other weeds declared noxious in our area, and asked councillors what action they wanted to take from here.
“What are we going to do – are we going to pursue the matter or do we just forget about it?” he asked. Many councillors expressed determination to get it registered as a noxious weed.
Councillor Clive McCarthy said he is adamant that it must be listed. “It's taking over farming land and destroying pasture” he said.
“We have to start somewhere.”
Councillors voted to reaffirm their insistence that biddy bush be declared a noxious weed, and also that council approach Forests NSW, asking them to control biddy bush on the land under their control.
Councillor Neil Francis suggested that council, like Bathurst Council, should dedicate more funds towards controlling Biddy Bush.
“Put a few bob into it to prove we are fair dinkum,” he said.
Council currently contributes $10,000 a year to controlling biddy bush.
