The auditorium at the Oberon RSL Club was full to the brim last Wednesday with Oberon’s business people, dressed in their finest, to celebrate the town’s thriving business community.
The Oberon Business Awards for 2009 were very well supported again this year, with many businesses and employees being nominated in a number of categories.
Long-time Oberon businessman Ray Mawhood presented the awards to the winners of each category, which were in some cases highly competitive.
Mr Mawhood reminded the crowd of the extensive range of businesses in Oberon, and how amazing it is that so many Oberon locals were born and educated in the town, and are now going forward through business in the town.
“The one thing about Oberon is that we have many small businesses here that we should use,” he said.
The award for Charity/Volunteer Worker of the Year was a particularly important category this year, with so many wonderful, selfless individuals in the community worthy of recognition.
Announcer for the night Andrew Bird said that the Business Association recognises the contribution made by volunteers in the community, and understands that not all can be nominated or win the award.
The announcement of Mary Behan, who has worked tirelessly for St Vincent de Paul, as the winner raised a huge cheer from the crowd.
Mayor Keith Sullivan said that the awards night is about acknowledging the efforts of those who contribute to the town. Cr Sullivan told the crowd he was pleased he did not have to judge the awards, as every nominee that was read out he believed deserved the award.
Congratulations to all the nominees and the winners.
