Oberon’s Australia Day celebrations will be jam-packed with activities.

The festivities will get underway on January 26 with a community breakfast from 7.30am.

It will be held at the Christian Life Centre in Albion Street, with Peter Herbert acting as the town’s Australia Day Ambassador.

The community smoko will run from 9.30am to 10.15am.

Tea, coffee, cocky’s joy, scones and ANZAC biscuits will be served in keeping with the occasion.

The official ceremony will follow at 10.30am with Councillor Don Fitzpatrick acting as Master of Ceremonies.

A spokesperson for Oberon Visitor Information Centre said the ceremony would begin with the unfurling of the flag by the St John Ambulance Cadets and a performance of the national anthem by Bethany Richards.

Mayor of Oberon Cr Keith Sullivan will welcome guests, and this will be followed by an Australia Day address by Member for Bathurst Gerard Martin.

The Australia Day Ambassador, Peter Herbert, will be introduced to guests by Deputy Mayor Cr John McMahon, while various community awards are presented by Oberon’s councillors.

These will include the Oberon Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Sportsperson of the Year and Junior Sportsperson of the Year.

The presentation of awards will be followed by Peter Herbert’s address and the presentation of the Australia Day Ambassador Pin by the Woolworths store services manager. A whole host of social activities will follow the formal part of the day, beginning at noon.

These include the Celebrity Spider Bowl on the Oberon RSL bowling greens, a jumping castle for the children, family games and activities and a special Ms Australia Day competition.
