THERE is at least one day of the year when we can all take a moment to be thankful for the wonderful country and community we live in, and that day is Australia Day.
Australia Day in Oberon will be a huge event this year, and provide many opportunities to celebrate our great country and also our wonderful community.
The celebrations will begin with a Men's Breakfast, beginning at 7:30am at the Oberon Christian Life Centre. The breakfast will attended by our Australia Day Ambassador, Don Hazelwood.
Violinist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra for 45 years, including 33 years as Concertmaster, Don Hazelwood has enjoyed a long and successful career at the forefront of Australian classical music, not only as orchestral and chamber musician but also as a solo performer.
His studies in Paris prompted him to widen his experience internationally.
Tours with the Austral quartet and the Hazelwood Trio have taken him to centres of music all over the world, such as Chicago, Tokyo, London, and Moscow.
He presently performs in the chamber music groups, The Australian Trio and Pini, Hazelwood and Friends.
For his services to music he has received numerous awards. He was awarded an OBE in 1976 and was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1988.
Don plays on a Giovanni Baptista Grancino violin made in 1716 and a violin made of Australian timbers by the Australian violin maker, Graham Caldersmith in 2003.
Don said that he looking forward to spending Australia Day in Oberon and learning more about the Oberon district and people.
The Oberon RSL will host a huge Australia Day celebration, commencing with a morning tea at 9:30am, followed by the Official Ceremony at 10:30am.
Mr Hazelwood will play an important role in the Official Ceremony, by making a speech and presenting the awards, such as Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year.
Following the Official Ceremony, from noon there will be a flurry of activity with games of bowls and much family fun, with a jumping castle, face painting and children's games.
There are so many things to be proud of in being an Australian, from the lamb chop and VB, to our elite sports people, amazing landscape, our convict beginnings and especially our brave soldiers who went to war.
Come and celebrate being a proud Australian.
