Oberon’s chances of procuring a multi-purpose sport and recreation facility have been further boosted by a second application for a grant to fund the building of the $4.1 million facility.
In 2008, Oberon Council applied for a grant through the Local Schools Working Together Program to fund the facility, for which the plans include a double basketball stadium, which can also be used for netball, indoor hockey, soccer and cricket, a small gym, store rooms, a café, three activity rooms for aerobics, dance classes and exercise groups, and new change rooms.
The proposed sporting facility is planned to be located to the west of the Swimming Pool Complex, linking the pool and the new facility, and will extend to the edge of the Recreation Ground. The facility is also designed to provide toilets and change rooms for those using the Recreation Grounds.
At the December 2008 Ordinary Council meeting, it was decided that Council staff would make another application for funding under the Federal Government Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program for the multi -purpose sport and recreation centre for the full value of the project with the same plans as the previous application.
Council completed the plans and application in a very short period to submit the funding application in time.
However, further modification to these plans may be made in the future, such as covering the Oberon pool. This will however require a Council resolution to do so.
