MEMBER for Bathurst, Gerard Martin, Minister Assisting the Premier on Veterans’ Affairs, Graham West, and the State War Memorials Committee, have announced $10,000 in funding for the conservation of O’Connell ANZAC Memorial Avenue.
Mr Martin said the funding was made possible through the Community War Memorials Fund, which was announced in April 2008 to help local communities protect and restore war memorials.
“The funding will be allocated to the Community Guardians of the O’Connell ANZAC Memorial to conduct repairs and improvements to the Memorial,” Mr Martin said.
“O’Connell ANZAC Memorial Avenue consists of 122 Desert Ash trees planted to commemorate 32 veterans from World War One.
“The $10,000 will allow a local arborist to restore the trees, conduct remedial pruning, and grind and remove the dead trees.
“The memorial honours the memory of those who served for our freedom - and is a legacy for future generations,” Mr Martin added.
Mr West said the State Government offers its Community War Memorials Grants twice each year.
“The applications are considered by State War Memorials Committee members, who include Mr Don Rowe, President of the NSW RSL and representatives of heritage and community groups,” Mr West said.
“The next round of applications for grants will close on April 17 in advance of Anzac Day.
Mr West and Mr Martin are encouraging communities, councils and ex-service organisations interested in applying for funding to visit:
